Partnering with MY Entertainment for Charles Manson series
Today we announce that we have made our first ever commission, Manson’s Bloodline, a 4 x 60 documentary series produced by US production company MY Entertainment.
Manson’s Bloodline, which will deliver late summer, in advance of next year’s 50th anniversary of the murder spree undertaken by the cult leader and his followers, tells the story of Charles Manson’s grandson, Jason Freeman, and his coming to terms with his notorious grandfather. MY Entertainment obtained extraordinary access and the series features previously unheard telephone calls that Manson had with Jason from prison; Jason’s battle for his grandfather’s body following his death in November 2017; and exclusive footage of Manson’s funeral from earlier this year.
This new entry point and angle on the much-covered Manson story, as well as being timely (2019 also sees a new Tarantino movie, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie), was ripe for treatment and the exclusive access to never-before-seen materials, coupled with DRG’s previous experience of working with MYE, was enough for the business to quickly invest in the series’ development.
After working closely with MY Entertainment and seeing the wider opportunity as development progressed, we decided to fully fund production and commission the show, without a broadcaster commitment. However, since then, Reelz has come on board in the US and we have sold the pan-Scandinavian rights to Viaplay.
The expectation now is that Bloodline will become a long-running, returning documentary series franchise, exploring how the activities and atrocities of some of the world’s most infamous criminals impacted not only their own destinies but also those of the people around them.
