Fancy a trim? Pop along to Desmond’s, gentleman’s hairdresser and cultural melting pot of Britain’s varied black community.
Desmond Ambrose is the owner, a self-taught barber who knows only one style – short-back-and-sides. Born in Guyana, he dreams of retiring there, unlike his wife Shirley who has crossed the cultural divide with the aid of their three children; businessman Michael, student Gloria and rapping computer freak Sean. Beautifully written with a plethora of hilarious one-liners, the series follows the family, and the barber shop’s disparate bunch of regulars, as they cope with the lighter and more serious sides of being black in Britain.
