A stylish crime thriller from the BBC, directed by Otto Bathurst and starring Ben Whishaw and Pete Postlethwaite. Twenty three year old Ben Coulter embarks upon a spontaneous evening of fun with Melanie, a sexy and charismatic stranger. As one thing leads to another – they end up at her place and Ben’s life is changed forever. In the morning he wakes to find Melanie stabbed to death in bed. He is covered in blood and holding the murder weapon. If only he can recall what happened that night.
From the moment he is arrested, a game of cat and mouse ensues between DCI Box, an old school policeman and Ralph Stone, Ben’s duty solicitor. In the middle are Ben’s parents – at sea in the system with the certainties they felt about their son turned upside down. Could he really be a rapist or a murderer? Criminal Justice won BAFTA awards for Best Drama Serial and Best Writer and Ben Whishaw achieved a Best Actor International Emmy Award for his portrayal of Ben Coulter. It was the top rated BBC mini-series of the year.
