A two part series exploring the issue of race and identity through the eyes of people who see cosmetic surgery as an acceptable way of conforming to Western society’s idea of perfection.
Modern cosmetic surgery began about 100 years ago and recent research shows that many of its early recipients belonged to ethnic or racial groups. These were people who wanted to fit in to a society prejudiced against them: the Jews in Germany, the Irish in New York and light skinned blacks in South Africa. How far have people’s decisions to have cosmetic surgery come full circle?
