Since mammals first evolved 200 million years ago, they have spread across the globe and conquered the planet. Yet perhaps the most difficult journey an animal will take is the one inside its mother’s womb. The incredible diversity and adaptability of the animal kingdom is explored and some fascinating evolutionary twists emerge along the way. The largest land animal has the longest gestation period of all creatures. We see how the elephant takes 22 months to grow from a microscopic fertilised egg into a 250lb bouncing baby. The dog is the most successful of all mammals with 400 different breeds. The film examines the adaptations which enable a dog to produce multiple litters within a gestation period of little more than two months. And following the extraordinary journey of a dolphins’ foetal development a clue is revealed to support the theory that dolphins’ ancestors once lived on land….
