Songbirds

Songbirds is a documentary musical in which female prisoners sing of their experiences in prison and how they ended up inside. The songs are emotive and heart-felt, and a rare chance for them to tell their story. The film was critically acclaimed at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. For the women there’s the constant pain of those who are separated from their kids either for their sentence or forever. For many there are hideous memories of physical abuse and for some there’s the sad reality that life on the inside seems preferable to that on the out. How do these women feel, what do they talk about and why are they here?
