First-look deal with Thoroughly Modern Media

We have signed an exclusive, two-year, first-look deal with factual features specialists, Thoroughly Modern Media.

Thoroughly Modern Media (TMM) was founded in 2014 by multiple BAFTA, Emmy and RTS award-winning director, Jay Taylor. The production company hit the headlines earlier this year when Alison Sharman – the former head of commissioning at SBS Australia, whose other roles have included director of daytime and factual at ITV and BBC controller of daytime - joined as its first creative director.

TMM is best known for its programming featuring the extraordinary chef Heston Blumenthal, including the 2016 Grierson Award nominee for Best Science Documentary, Heston’s Dinner in Space (1 x 90) and Inside Heston’s World (4 x 60), an SBS Australia commission that followed Blumenthal as he relocated his Fat Duck restaurant to Australia for a year.

TMM specialises in producing programming rooted in fact, but delivered in an entertaining, engaging and enjoyable way. In addition to partnering with Heston, the TMM team has worked across a number of high-profile food titles over time, including Masterchef and Saturday Kitchen. Capitalising on this wealth of experience, the company is continuing to explore innovative food-based ideas and formats, but is also developing a range of other projects and is currently in funded development on a number of titles with UK broadcasters.

Katy Cundall, SVP acquisitions at DRG struck the deal with TMM. She comments:

“Jay and Alison are a formidable team and really know what it takes to engage an audience. TMM’s productions sit in an interesting space between conventional factual and entertainment and allow us to take something very different out to the international marketplace. There is brilliant slate of projects already in development and I can’t wait to see what other new ideas evolve over time.”

“DRG has represented some of Thoroughly Modern Media’s titles over the past year or so and we have used that time wisely, really getting to know each other well. We are confidant that this slow ‘courtship’ is the perfect foundation for a successful and enduring relationship.”

Jay Taylor, Thoroughly Modern Media’s managing director adds: “DRG has proved itself in securing excellent deals for our existing content but it was the team’s industry knowledge, passion for TV and it’s wholehearted support for our future ambitions that makes them such a good fit for us in the longer term. We thoroughly enjoy working with Katy and the team, we value their creative and commercial input and genuinely believe that this new partnership with DRG will play an instrumental role in helping to develop and grow our business.”
