A brilliant new format with lots of catches!
Freshman Fisherman is a new competitive reality format that creates a whole new programme about one of the world’s oldest industries - fishing. Twelve ordinary people – six men and six women from all over the country – meet up at the coast and are divided into three teams of four. Each team is supervised by an experienced skipper - with his own fishing boat - who becomes a de facto team leader. The skippers train, motivate and observe the progress of their individual fishermen, while doing their best to build a team that they can lead to victory. And there’s a lot more to fishing at sea than meets the eye: it’s a tough job, requiring physical and mental strength and the freshmen must battle seasickness, freezing cold, storms and their own limitations in the spectacular and sometimes very unforgiving surroundings. In each programme the freshmen face each other in an individual challenge, as well as a team event. These challenges could be a specific method of fishing, a process for preparing fish – or even creating a meal from their catch. The two individuals with the lowest scores in each episode then battle it out in a knockout dual challenge, with the loser each week going home – until only three remain for the grand final. As well as being fun and entertaining to watch, Freshman Fisherman is very informative. The contestants get to live as fishermen from times gone by and we learn the significance of the industry both today and from a historical perspective.
