The woman who was given a new face…made from the flesh of her leg
Tambudzai Makinzi was a young model and beauty Queen living in Cape Town South Africa when she was struck down by an aggressive tumour.
It was diagnosed as Chrondrosarcoma – a very rare type of cancer. After 4 years of unsuccessful treatment in Africa, it grew back more aggressively than ever, devouring her whole face. Her only hope of survival was to have a dangerous operation - and Tambu flew 6000 miles to London to meet an extraordinary surgeon who believed he could save her life.
In March 2015 Professor Hutchison pulled together a specialist team of 6 surgeons and they embarked on a pioneering operation to save her life. After more than 35 hours on the operating table Tambu was given a new face – built using flesh from her leg.
