One of the least known stories from the second world war is finally told – how British scientists developed a navigation system so accurate, planes could drop their bombs within feet of their intended target.
It was called Oboe. Allegedly, this system hastened the end of the war and played a crucial role in the D-Day invasion. Oboe was, and remains, controversial. Some in Bomber Command believed attention to Oboe belittled the courage of their pilots. Others thought, and a few still believe, that reports of astonishing accuracy and the impact on the outcome of the war have been exaggerated. Birth Of The Smart Bomber will resurrect Oboe and find out whether it really did help win a war.
